The Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct by accusing the BJP of inciting communal violence, and asked him to respond by January 20.

The EC notice follows a complaint lodged by the BJP’s Delhi State chief Satish Upadhyay that Mr Kejriwal had made “unverified allegations” against him and his colleague, Ashish Sood, accusing the BJP of trying to “incite communal violence” in Trilokpuri, Nandnagari, Nangloi and Bawana in Delhi and of attacking churches.

The AAP leader had, therefore, said such actions had violated the Model Code of Conduct “by creating mutual hatred, discord and tension between different communities and people of Delhi”.

The EC has, in its notice, however, quoted from the Model Code of Conduct to point out that “criticism of other political parties…shall be confined to their policies and programmes, past record and work…” and that “unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided.”
