The Congress on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pakistan, saying serious information like this should not have been revealed through Twitter.
“It is unfortunate that we get to know about Prime Minister’s visit through a tweet... India and Pakistan relations are not so good as yet that he stops over there on his way back from another country,” Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said.
“The Parliament session got over just a few days back, why was the Parliament and the country left in dark. Why didn’t the Prime Minister take the country and parliament in confidence,” he questioned.
“This ‘adventure’ of Prime Minister will have serious impact on national security; there were no changes in relationship (with Pakistan) by NSA talks, or Heart of Asia conference. Eventually Prime Minister needs to answer what has changed in ground situation,” Congress leader Manish Tewari said.
CPI welcomes move
The CPI welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to visit Lahore, saying it would help take forward the Indo-Pak dialogue process.
“There have been many strains in our relationship. The ice was finally broken by the NSA-level talks and the visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Pakistan. Now that process is being followed up by Mr. Modi’s visit,” CPI national secretary D. Raja said.
JD(U) ‘shocked’
The JD(U) said it was “stunned” by Mr. Modi's decision, especially in the wake of violations by the neighbouring country on the border.
The party said that “friendship and betrayal cannot go hand in hand” as it reacted sharply to the surprise announcement by Mr. Modi as he prepared to wind up his brief visit to Afghanistan on Friday.
