The body of a three-year-old girl, who fell into a borewell at Dheera village, was recovered by rescue workers of the Army and the Gurdaspur district administration on Thursday.

Despite the major rescue operation, Dilraj Kaur could not be saved. “She had died much earlier,” senior medical officer at the Civil Hospital Mohinder Singh said.

Dilraj of Dairywal village, on a visit to her mother's village, had slipped and fallen into the 180-foot-deep borewell while playing with other children. The owner covered had the borewell covered with a gunny bag after its electric motor stopped functioning a few days ago. Dilraj got stuck at a depth of about 30 feet and remained there for over 21 hours

The authorities initially launched the rescue operation with the help of the local police, but later called in a Jammu and Kashmir battalion from the nearby Tibri Cantonment. As soon as she was taken out, the child was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
