The Centre has sanctioned environmental clearance for the proposed nuclear power plant at Haripur in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday.

“Environmental clearance for the Haripur nuclear power plant has been sanctioned,” Mr. Ramesh told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings.

Asked about the stiff resistance by opposition parties against the nuclear power plant, Mr. Ramesh said “I don’t know anything about it. We discussed the project only with the chief minister. Discussions are on at different levels.” He said the chief minister was strongly in favour of eco-friendly projects in the state.
