The CPI(M) Central Committee on Wednesday asked the Polit Bureau to rework the draft report on the new political-tactical line presented for adoption at the four-day meeting.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, addressing a press conference, sought to play down the differences over how and where the leadership erred leading to its electoral decline and failure to expand its base. “After the discussions, the Polit Bureau came with a proposal to prepare or finalise the review report which was adopted by the Central Committee unanimously without anybody voting against it,” Mr. Karat said.

The party will adopt a line keeping in mind the changed political environment. “We will undertake an in-depth review and adopt the new political line,” Mr. Karat said. “We will come out with a resolution soon. We will adopt it in the next Central Committee meeting, after we get suggestions and amendments are made to the draft,” he added.

The Polit Bureau met on Tuesday evening and listed seven core issues as the framework in which the new line would be revised.

The party is chiefly concerned with the failure to grow independently, not forging a secular and Left democratic front and the rise and spread of the BJP and Hindutva forces, Mr. Karat said.
