CHRI condemns Maoist violence

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) has condemned the killing by Maoists in the past week of 24 Eastern Frontier Rifle jawans and also the subsequent strike on villagers in Bihar’s Jammui district for allegedly harbouring police informers.

“Such wanton violence and bloodshed is reprehensible and unacceptable and has no place in our democracy,” a statement issued here on Friday by CHRI Director Maja Daruwala said.

The international non-governmental organisation urged Maoists to abjure violence and work out solutions to their grievances with the government through negotiations.

It asked the state and the police not to indulge in retaliatory or random violence that could endanger the lives of ordinary people in the areas concerned.

The CHRI appealed to Maoists and the state to replace the ongoing military engagement with a political process and arrive at an early resolution of the conflict.

“We believe that the path of violence will keep the poor always poor and only serve to slow down the process of growth and development of the poorest,” the statement said.
