Bihar official held for leaking staff selection exam paper

: Even as last June’s arrests over the Class 12 Board exam merit list scam are fresh in public memory, Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) secretary Parmeshwar Ram was arrested on Wednesday evening in connection with a question paper leak.

Sources said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has suggested that the State government cancel the staff selection exam held last Sunday. Government sources said the examination would be held afresh soon.

The SIT had earlier detained Mr. Ram after a raid on his residence late on Tuesday night, but he was released then after a long interrogation. Some documentary evidence had been seized from his home, the police said. Even after the leaked BSSC question paper had gone viral on social media, Mr. Ram continued to deny the leak. Enraged examinees later thrashed him at the gate to his office.

A data entry operator has already been arrested and more arrests are likely over the next few days, said police officials.

‘Over 100 people involved’

“Yes, the BSSC scam appears to be a bigger scam than last year’s merit list scam. Over a hundred people are involved in this scam,” a senior police official involved in the investigation of the BSSC question paper leak told The Hindu .

The SIT team is led by Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, who also headed the investigation into the merit list scam in which the Bihar School Examination Board chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife Usha Sinha were sent to jail.
