BJP disowns MP’s comments

January 08, 2017 12:48 am | Updated 12:48 am IST - New Delhi:

The BJP on Saturday distanced itself from comments by its MP from Unnao, Sakshi Maharaj, who blamed the population boom in India on the Muslim community.

Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the BJP was for inclusive growth and the country would be governed as per law and the Constitution and not the baton.

“I have not heard his statement but the government and the BJP believe in development for all and the country runs on law and the Constitution. His [Sakshi Maharaj] statement, I believe is neither that of the party nor the government,” Mr. Naqvi said.

Speaking at a religious function on Friday, the MP had said, “We say four wives and 40 children won’t do, won’t do, won’t do...it is not the time for four wives and 40 children. Women are not machines. Women should be respected, be they Hindu or Muslim,” the four-time Lok Sabha MP said.
