Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said the Indian Embassy in Kabul was the target of attack by the suicide bomber on Thursday.
“I believe that the suicide bomb was directed against the embassy because the bomber came up to the outside perimeter wall in a car loaded with explosives,” she told correspondents here.
Ms. Rao said three Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel, who were guarding the wall, were wounded by shrapnel while the embassy personnel and staff were safe.
After the July 7, 2008 blast outside the embassy, “extra and stringent” measures were taken and those worked.
The road in front of the mission was barricaded, she pointed out.
U.S. expresses concern
U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer condemned the attack and described it as “deeply troubling.”
In a statement, he said that on behalf of President Barack Obama, he extended to the people of India, America’s support and its concern over the bombing.
