Approach CJI, Gadkari tells Balakrishnan

January 17, 2011 12:12 am | Updated November 17, 2021 03:34 am IST - Uppala (Kerala):

In the backdrop of serious allegations against his close relatives, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman K.G. Balakrishnan should urge the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to constitute a panel of retired Supreme Court judges to find out the truth, Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari said here on Sunday.

“I feel Justice Balakrishnan should ask the CJI to constitute a panel of retired Supreme Court judges to find out the truth in the allegations that his [Justice Balakrishnan's] close relatives have amassed huge wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income,” Mr. Gadkari told reporters.

If Justice Balakrishnan, a former Chief Justice of India, does so, it would help maintain the credibility of the country's judicial system, he said.

Mr. Gadkari parried a question whether he preferred Justice Balakrishnan's resignation as NHRC chairman.

The BJP chief was here to flag off a party-sponsored “Kerala Raksha Padayatra,” led by State president of the party V. Muraleedharan, from here to Thiruvananthapuram.
