The 15th edition of the Cavinkare Ability Awards, which was instituted to honour achievers with disabilities in various fields, will be presented at an event at the Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao concert hall, Chetpet, on February 18.
Conceived by Cavinkare Pvt. Ltd., and Ability Foundation, a non-governmental organisation working towards the empowerment of persons with disabilities, the awards were instituted in 2003 under two categories. The Hindu is the media partner for this year’s event.
This year, nearly 180 nominations were received from 20 States. The Eminence Award is presented to a person with disability for individual achievement in initiating an organisation to contribute to society. This award comprises a trophy, citation and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.
Three persons with disabilities are given Mastery Awards in recognition of their achievements in different fields. Each recipient of the award receives a citation, trophy and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh. Some of the awardees from past years include Deepa Malik, who won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in shot put, and Harman Singh Sidhu, who has been campaigning for road safety.
