An Assistant Sub-Inspector of RPF was killed and six other policemen were injured when railway employees, protesting against the death of a colleague in an accident, allegedly snatched three guns and fired at them.
Infuriated over the death of Mahendra Mandal, who was run over by a tractor, some employees at the Jamalpur Railway Workshop turned on Railway Protection Force and State Auxiliary Police personnel who fired in the air in an attempt to disperse them, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) P.K. Thakur told PTI.
The mob snatched two SLRs and an INSAS rifle from the policemen and opened fire, he said.
ASI Parmeshwar Singh died in mob frenzy and it was not immediately clear where he was shot dead or was lynched by the mob, Mr. Thakur said.
Munger SP M. Sunil Naik and five policeman were injured in stone pelting by the mob, which damaged the vehicle of District Magistrate Arvind Kumar Singh.
Law and order was restored at the intervention of top police and railway officials after contacts were established with the agitators and their union, Mr. Thakur said.
The railway employees later returned the three guns.
