The police seized 300 detonators and 96 metres of fuse wire from a private bus near Edakkad here on Friday morning.

The explosive materials packed in three bags were recovered from beneath the rear seat of the Kozhikode- Payyannur bus at Edakkad at 9-45 a.m. The police said that the explosive materials were unearthed when the police stopped the bus at Edakkad and conducted a search on it following a tip-off. The police said that no passenger on board the bus claimed the bags. The bomb detection and disposal squad personnel thoroughly examined the bus.

The seizure of the explosive materials assumed special gravity in view of the unprecedented security arrangements being made by the police in connection with the visit of Vice President Hamid Ansari here on Saturday to attend two public functions here. Nearly 1500 police personnel were being deployed here to ensure elaborate security arrangements on the occasion of the visit of the Vice President. The task of maintaining the security arrangements during the VVIP’s visit was assigned to eight Superintendents of Police.

Mr. Ansari would reach here on Saturday morning by helicopter. He would present the A.K. Nair Memorial Award to T.K.A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister at Sadhoo Kallyana Mandapam here at 11-30 a.m. Only invited persons carrying invitation cards would be allowed to enter the hall. The organisers were instructed by the police to give a list of the invitees.

The Vice President’s second programme is the inauguration of the Kannur University’s Inter-University Centre for Bio-sciences on the Mangattuparamba campus here at 3-30 p.m. Governor R.S. Gavai would also attend the function.
