The Indian embassy in Kabul and four consulates in Afghanistan have been put on high alert following intelligence inputs that the Taliban may be preparing for a strike at Indian establishments, government sources said here on Thursday.
Indian paramilitary forces, which provide security at the Embassy and the consulates in Afghanistan, had been alerted about the threat, sources said, adding that inputs suggested that explosives-laden vehicles and suicide bombers could be used in attacks.
Indian diplomats and officials have also been told to stay indoors and avoid travelling as long as the threat perception remained high. India maintains consulates in Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandhar.
The sources said local police and security agencies in Afghanistan had also been alerted and were taking necessary steps to tighten security around the Indian embassy and the consulates.
