Authorities in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago have uncovered an alleged assassination plot against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, local media reported on Thursday.

At least a dozen people have been arrested and security forces remained on high alert, C News reported.

Several cabinet officers were also reportedly targeted in the plot.

Speaking at a press conference, Ms. Persad-Bissessar called the discovery “an evil, devious act of treason” and “a cowardly plot.” The country has been subject to a state of emergency for months due to ongoing drug violence.
