The Palestinian Authority has recalled its envoys to Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria after their Ambassadors attended an Israeli reception marking the U.S. Embassy’s move to Jerusalem, it said on Wednesday. “The recalls are to consult with our Ambassadors to these states about their positions and their commitment to the EU’s positions,” said the PA’s Foreign Ministry.
Meanwhile, Guatemala inaugurated its Israel Embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, becoming the first country to follow in the footsteps of the U.S.
The U.S.’s Embassy move was accompanied by mass protests and clashes along the Gaza border that saw Israeli forces kill some 60 Palestinians. Israel has faced criticism over its use of live fire on protesters.
Meanwhile, Turkey told the Israeli Consul General in Istanbul to leave the country temporarily, state media said on Wednesday. Turkey had already withdrawn its Ambassador in Tel Aviv for consultations and told the Israeli Ambassador to Ankara to leave, while Israel ordered the Turkish consul in Jerusalem to leave for an unspecified period of time.
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas on Tuesday withdrew his top envoy to Washington.
