Bangladesh warned Pakistan on Tuesday against distorting history after its High Commission in Dhaka posted a video on Bangladesh’s independence. The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned Pakistan’s High Commissioner Rafiuzzaman Siddiqui to its office and lodged a protest.

Bangladeshi media outlets had reported that the Pakistan High Commission shared a video on its Facebook page which reportedly claimed that ‘Ziaur Rahman, not Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, announced Bangladesh’s independence’.

Mujib’s speech

Meanwhile, the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s March 7 speech, which served as a source of inspiration for numerous freedom fighters, has been recognised by UNESCO has part of the world’s documentary heritage, Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova announced on Monday

The International Advisory Committee, during its meeting from October 24 to 27, reportedly recommended the speech for inscription on the Memory of the World International Register.

“The world will now get to know more about our father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and our glorious Liberation War”, said Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali.

The speech is played throughout Bangladesh during various national occasions.
