The Sri Lankan Army has clarified that no Army camp has been closed down in the Northern Province since January this year. The reference to the month of January assumes significance in view of the change of regime that took place in that month.
According to the clarification, the maximum number of camps closed down since the end of Eelam War in May 2009 was 24 and this took place last year. This followed the closure of 15 camps in 2013; nine in 2010; seven in 2009 and four in 2011. Totally, 59 camps, termed in the statement as “small outposts,” were wound up since May 19, 2009.
