• A British court has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to the U.S. to face criminal charges including those related to the Espionage Act. This was after assurances that Mr. Assange would not be held in highly restrictive prison conditions.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union has asked the U.S. Government to drop the charges against Mr Assange as pursuing them would amount to a chilling effect on investigative journalism in the country.
  • Julian Assange is the founder and director of the Wikileaks portal which released on April 5, 2010, a 39-minute video that showed gun-sight footage of U.S. helicopters in action during the Iraqi insurgency in 2007. The video showed the helicopter crew firing indiscriminately and killing civilians and two Reuters war correspondents. Later, WikiLeaks also published then presidential candidate (and former Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton’s aide John Podesta’s emails before the 2016 presidential elections.
