Eight members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group in Egypt were on Tuesday sentenced to life in prison for protesting without permission and blocking a road here.
An Egyptian court issued the verdict in absentia. The defendants are also accused of joining a terrorist group, possessing weapons, inciting violence, damaging public and private buildings among other charges.
Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters have been rounded up and put on trial since the army deposed the Islamist president in 2013 following massive street protests against his rule.
In April, an Egyptian criminal court has sentenced the ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 12 other Muslim Brotherhood leaders for 20 years in prison for inciting violence near the Ittihadeya presidential palace in 2012.
