A domestic mechanism to investigate allegations of human rights violations during the Eelam War will be in place next month, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said on Wednesday.
In his interaction with representatives of the local media, the President said by September, some progress in investigation is expected. “If they find any evidence of violations of human rights, those responsible for such violations will be dealt with under laws of this country,” he said, reiterating his country’s position against allowing international investigators.
The President’s observations assume relevance in the context of the scheduled presentation of a report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
