China on Thursday signalled that it was unlikely to shift its stance on designating Masood Azhar, head of the banned terror outfit Jaish-e Mohammed (JeM), as an international terrorist in the UN Security Council 1267 committee.

Asked to comment on the latest move by France, Britain and the United States to list Azhar as in international terrorist, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said: “We have said many times that the UN Security Council 1267 Committee has clear regulations on the listing of terrorist organisations or individuals and the related procedures.”

“China will continue to participate in discussions in the Sanctions Committee of the UN and other affiliated institutions of the UN in a responsible manner.”

China has repeatedly placed a “technical hold” on listing Azhar as a global terrorist, despite recognising the JeM as a terrorist organisation.
