Police in northern China say eight people were killed and five injured in a bus fire believed to be an act of arson.

Police in the city of Xi’an said on Friday on their official microblog that they are treating the fire as a criminal act. It didn’t give information on any suspects.

The statement said the bus was moving along a highway when it suddenly burst into flames around noon on Thursday.

Not the first of its kind

Several bus arson attacks in recent years in China blamed on people who were mentally unstable or with personal grudges have killed and injured scores of people. One in January killed 17 people and injured 32, and a deliberately set fire killed 47 people on a bus in 2013.
