Amunugama returns to Sri Lankan Cabinet

Sarath Amunugama, senior politician of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), on Friday returned to the Cabinet after a gap of two months.

He took oath of office in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Secretariat here. He was sworn in as Minister in charge of special assignments, according to a release. Till dissolution of Parliament, he was the Minister looking after Higher Education and Research.

The 76-year-old politician, who had represented Kandy in Parliament, is now an MP through the national list of the UPFA. Originally a civil servant, Dr. Amunugama was once a member of the United National Party (UNP) and served as Minister under former Presidents, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa. He was also the Chairman of the Lake House group of publications.
