Suspected militants on Wednesday attacked a hydroelectric station in the Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in southern Russia, killing two guards and setting off bombs.
In the pre-dawn strike, the attackers killed the guards at the Baksan hydro electrical power and carried out two blasts damaging two of three generators, reports said.
“At about 05:20 a.m. (local time) a group of unknown people burst into the Baksan hydropower plant in the village of Islamei and shot two security guards. Then the unknown assailants made two explosions in the territory of the plant, including the blowing up of the generator,” RIA Novosti reported.
Two staff were wounded in the blasts and fire in the administrative and machine room of the Baksan HPP, the police are searching for a third bomb, ITAR-TASS said.
The assailants fled. There have been no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack.
The operator of Baksan HPP RusHydro said power generation has been suspended and its gates have been opened.
Baksan HPP with 25 MW capacity was initially built in 1938.
