October 08, 2009 05:11 pm | Updated 05:11 pm IST - London

A new Homeland Military Command will be created by the Conservatives,if voted to power, to fight any serious threat in the UK similar to the Mumbai terror attack.

Baroness Neville-Jones, former intelligence chief and now shadow Security Minister on Thursday pledged a permanent armed group on standby to fight attacks more severe than the London bombings of July 7, 2005.

The Rapid Reaction Spearhead Force of Army, Royal Air force and Royal Navy personnel would be ready to combat increasingly frequent natural disasters, such as floods and hurricanes that have been blamed on climate change.

“What happened in Mumbai last November could happen here in the UK,” Lady Neville-Jones told the Conservative Party conference in Manchester city.
