Pakistan on Monday was elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the third time. It held this office in 1962-63 and 1986-87.

Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Ansar Parvez was elected unanimously for the post for 2011-12. Pakistan's candidature was endorsed by the West Asia and South Asia Group. Pakistan Foreign Office described its election to the 35-member Board as an acknowledgement of the positive advances it has made in the nuclear field. “It is also a recognition of its active role in the Agency.” It said the Board under Pakistan's chairmanship would deal with the Medium Term Strategy for 2012-17.
