NATO recovers body of second U.S. missing sailor in Afghanistan

The body of a second U.S. sailor missing in eastern Afghanistan has been recovered by NATO, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

The pair went missing last Friday after they drove into a rebel— controlled area of Logar province.

“Villagers found a body, left by insurgents in coffin, on Wednesday in Baraki Barak district, a neighbouring district to Charkh where the troops went missing” Din Mohammed Darwish provincial governor spokesman said.

One of the soldiers was killed during at the firefight area and the other was injured, he said. “Later the other soldiers died due to his injuries”.

The U.S. has around 90,000 troops in Afghanistan, with 10,000 more expected to arrive in August. Around 50,000 troops from other NATO and non—NATO nations are also based in the country.

The Taliban have held another U.S. soldier for more than a year.

Bowe Bergdahl was captured in eastern Afghanistan when he left his unit in June 2009. The hostage has appeared in several Taliban videos, the most recent released in April.
