Nepal's Supreme Court on Friday upheld the decision to imprison Charles Sobhraj for life, for a crime he committed 35 years ago.
Sobhraj was charged with the murder of an American lady in Nepal in 1975 and was sentenced to a life term by lower courts.
The Supreme Court upheld that decision based on “circumstantial evidence”.
However, Sobhraj denied his involvement claiming that he had not visited Nepal before 2003, when he was arrested in Kathmandu. As per police reports, he was engaged in about a dozen killings.
He also faced a charge of possessing fake passports. In India alone, he faced a 20-year jail term.
With the decision of the Supreme Court, the chances of Sobhraj's release are slim. One of his lawyers, Shakuntala Thapa (also his mother-in-law) and his wife Nihita said they would move the International Court in Geneva. Born to an Indian father and a Vietnamese mother, Sobhraj (66) is a French national.
