Gunmen attacked a government office in southern Nepal, killing a policeman and wounding a senior official, officials said.

Home Ministry spokesman Jayamukunda Khanal said the attackers fired at the district administration office in the commercial hub of Birgunj, on the border with India about 160 kilometres south of Katmandu.

A police officer guarding the office was killed while an assistant government administrator was wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The attackers fled after the firing, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police said they were investigating, but had no suspects.
