A personal tragedy struck M. Amirtha Gowri of Veerakkalputhur village near Mettur when both her parents were killed in a road accident midway through her Plus-Two public examinations in March.
Undeterred by the tragedy, she gathered courage and appeared for the rest of the examinations in her Vaideshwarar Higher Secondary School centre in Mettur RS.
Her relatives, friends and teachers heaved a sigh of relief on Friday when she came out successful in the public examinations with a marks tally of 695 – Tamil 154, English 141, physics 111, chemistry 89, biology 102 and mathematics 98.
Amritha Gowri’s parents Murugesan (53), employed as a foreman with the Tangedco at Mettur, and Sumathi (45) were returning in a two-wheeler after attending a function in a relative’s house on March 5, when the vehicle was knocked down by a speeding car, killing both of them.
No one expected young Amirtha to appear for the rest of the examinations in the midst of such a tragedy.
K. Sivakumar, a teacher of the same school and a close friend of Murugesan, wanted her to write all the examinations, even though her close relatives were opposed to the idea. He reminded Amirtha Gowri about the wish of her father to see her as an engineer, and motivated her to write the remaining examinations to fulfil his dream.
Amirtha, who was initially reluctant later changed her mind and appeared for the English examination, by the time the post-mortem of her parent’s bodies was over. Later she wrote the other examinations that followed.
She wants to pursue diploma course in a polytechnic, as it may help her in getting a job in the Tangedco on compassionate ground.
Amirtha feels that she has paid a fitting tribute in an apt way to her late parents’ souls by coming out successful in the public examinations.
