A 70-year-old woman died after falling into a pit dug for underground sewerage system in Chidambaram on Saturday night.

Locals found the body floating on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Saraswathy Ammal.

The body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem to the Chidambaram Government General Hospital.

Police sources said the pit was dug on Kottaiyan Street by the contractor as part of the sewerage project covering 33 wards in the Chidambaram municipality.

The pit had been left uncovered and the contractor did not put up a safety barricade.

On Saturday night, the victim, who was staying alone, was walking to her home on Thoppayan Street. The pit was filled to the brim with rainwater. Saraswathy Ammal tripped and fell into the pit and drowned.

A case has been registered.
