French nationals in Puducherry turned out less enthusiastically to cast their vote in the second phase of French Presidential elections on Sunday.
“It could be because of the weather. But, generally the voters are less enthusiastic this time as their preferred candidate is not contesting now,” said Lamour Muraly, an election agent at the polling booth in Lycee Francais French International School in Puducherry.
There were 11 contestants in the first round of the French Presidential election held in the last week of April. In the second round, the electorates had to choose between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron.
‘No better choice’
Another French national said that many were not aware of whom they were voting for. “Many elderly persons who had come to cast their ballot had come to vote for the candidate who was not contesting in the second phase. Since it is a far right and centrist candidates contesting, the electorates here are casting their votes because they have to,” she said.
Jayashree Veerappan Ravi, a literature student from Ethiraj College, added that the French nationals here have to accept the people’s verdict.
“Hence, I decided to vote in the second phase as well. Many of us are still confused but we had to make a choice between the two,” said Ms. Ravi, who is a first-time voter.
