Thousands of devotees thronged Villianur near here on Thursday to offer prayers to the presiding deity of Sri Thirukameshwarar-Kokilambigai temple and participate in the annual car festival.
Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, Public Works Minister A. Namassivayam and MLAs joined the devotees in pulling the temple car. The car went around the Mada Streets of Villianur before reaching the temple.
Ms. Bedi and Mr. Narayanasamy later performed pujas separately. A festive atmosphere prevailed in the town since early morning. The temple authorities, organisations and many individuals organised “annadhanam” for the devotees.
A holiday had been declared for all government offices and local educational institutions in Villianur commune. The police made tight security arrangements at the venue. The Thirukameswarar temple is one of the largest in the Union Territory.
