The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) on Tuesday picketed the Directorate of School Education on the 100-feet road protesting against the total neglect of the education sector by the Puducherry Government.

Over 200 activists of the party were arrested after jostling between the police in front of the premises. The agitators also locked the main gate of the building and prevented the entry of staff inside the building.

VCK Puducherry unit secretary S. Paavanan accused the government of completely neglecting the education sector and said that it had failed to constitute a separate Board for Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

Though the Puducherry Government had notified the Right to Education Act in 2011 it had failed to implement the Act in letter and spirit. Though the Act stipulates 25 per cent reservation for students from disadvantaged sections the target group had not benefited. He alleged that the Puducherry Government was acting in support of private educational institutions.

The agitators also demanded the government to improve the infrastructural facilities in schools located in rural areas and fill up vacant posts of teachers in all government schools.

The government should also increase the capacity of student hostels for Scheduled Caste in Puducherry, they demanded.
