Traffic awareness campaign from today

The Transport Department will organise a series of traffic awareness programmes, starting February 4, in various parts of the Union Territory.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Minister for Revenue M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who also holds the Transport portfolio, said the awareness programme was held as per the directions of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Mr. Shahjahan said the department would highlight the importance of wearing helmets during the week-long programme. Last year, 219 fatal accidents involving two-wheeler riders occurred in the U.T. A majority of the victims were not wearing helmet. Helmet rally, competition for children, street plays, car rally, and medical check-ups form part of the drive.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy will inaugurate the programme on Monday.
