The Directorate of Economics and Statistics observed the 11th National Statistics Day on Thursday.

Deliberating on the importance of statistics, Minister for Economics and Statistics A. Namassivayam said statistics was required to implement a scheme or project. “It is the basis to plan any welfare or development scheme and without that nothing can be implemented,” he said.

He said statistics helped reach the government schemes to the right people. “Many people are not aware of the importance of this department. Only through correct statistics, a government can plan the development. This information should reach the public for them to understand what is happening in Puducherry and where we stand in the scale of development,” said Mr. Namassivayam.

He appreciated Directorate of Economics and Statistics staff for their contribution.

‘Not just data collection’

Secretary to Government (Economics and Statistics) D. Manikandan said that organised basic information should reach people. “This year’s theme is Administrative Statistics. Statistics is not just data collection alone. It helped in the short and long-term vision and to plan the future. This will decide the future of the country,” he said.
