The Students Federation of India will hold the 24th State conference of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry here from September 4 to 6 to deliberate on various issues prevailing in the education sector. The conference would be attended by at least 500 student representatives, educationists and social activists.

Addressing reporters here on Friday, J. Rajmohan, State secretary of SFI, Tamil Nadu said the Tamil Nadu government had diluted the Right to Education Act by not taking any steps to enforce it.

The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu failed to take any action against educational institutions collecting excess fees. Private schools in the state were collecting fees in excess of the levels prescribed by the Private Schools Fee Determination Committee.

Several institutions were also not following the Right to Education (RTE) guidelines to set aside 25 per cent of seats to students from socio-economically weaker sections, he said.

A. Anand, State secretary of SFI, Puducherry said the Puducherry government had failed to implement the RTE Act five years after it came into existence. Though the Puducherry government had notified the Act in 2011 it had failed to implement it in letter and spirit.

He alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre was trying to change the education curriculum to distort history and communalise the education system. The government is keen on incorporating communal ideology into the textbooks.
