Seventh economic census launched in Villupuram

To aid data collection, district divided into 38 blocks

District Collector L. Subramanian on Tuesday launched the seventh economic census at K.K. Road here.

The census, which is being conducted by the Department of Statistics and Project Implementation in collaboration with CSC e-Governance Service India Limited, will document details of all establishments including those in the organised and unorganised sector, small, marginal, medium and big industries functioning from their premises or rented buildings.

The census will also take into account the number of people working with the firm, information about the promoter such as gender, religion, caste, quantum of investment, number of people working in the firm.

Official sources said that as many as 8,00,368 households (1,21,521 - urban, 6,78,847 - rural) would be covered in the district, where enumerators will visit every household and commercial establishment in the district.

For easy collection of data, the district had been divided into 38 enumeration blocks as per the census department data. A total of 1,725 enumerators (190 for urban areas and 1,535 for rural areas) were deployed for the census.

Apart from this, 345 supervisors (38 for urban areas and 307 for rural localities) were deployed. This is the first time the census is being carried out with the assistance of technology. A mobile application has been developed and made available to all surveyors to facilitate the process, he added.
