Second phase of polio immunisation drive on

The second phase of intensive Pulse Polio immunisation began in Puducherry on Sunday. The Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, administered drops to children in the 0-5 age group.

A total of 448 polio booths were established across the Union Territory out of which 318 fixed booths were in Puducherry, 70 in Karaikal, 17 in Mahe and 21 in Yanam. Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy inaugurated the drive at the Municipal Mairie Hall in Nellithope. A senior medical officer in the Directorate of Health and Family Services said polio vaccine was administered to all children, even if they had already received oral polio vaccination or inactivated polio vaccination. The health team will conduct house-to-house visits and administer polio drops to children who were left out, on Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi administered polio drops at the Thavalakuppam PHC during her weekend inspection of Sri Poondiamman Temple pond in Keezhparikalpattu.
