Daily wage workers in the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) staged a sit-in between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Friday demanding regularisation of jobs.

T. Murugan, president of JIPMER Workers Union, said that most of the employees have been working for more than 14 years and have been denied their rights. All of them should be absorbed in service as permanent workers. He also sought immediate disbursal of dues worth Rs.4 crores to the Employees Provident Fund.

He said that the JIPMER management had been trying to send out the existing daily workers to new contractors when litigations regarding absorption of the daily rated employees were pending in the Central Industrial Tribunal and the Madras High Court.

The administration had earlier outsourced the services of around 450 staff to a private company and went for direct recruitment of 250 Multi tasking staff. The JIPMER administration should drop the move for outsourcing workers and absorb all daily wage workers as multi tasking staff as a one time measure.
