Preparations are under way for International Day of Yoga 2017 from June 19 to 23.

A mass yoga demonstration at the Promenade Beach on June 21 is one of the highlights of the celebrations. A national seminar-cum-workshop on the role of yoga in prevention, management and rehabilitation of chronic diseases and a yogasana competition are among the other programmes.

This is the third year that the Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research (CYTER) at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute under Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, is hosting the IDY as per the guidelines issued by the UGC and Ministry of AYUSH.

Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, CYTER Deputy Director, said the IDY will focus on raising awareness about the multi-faceted benefits of yoga. Yoga awareness programmes with emphasis on clinical perspective have been scheduled at the MGMCRI, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College and Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences.

A mass yoga awareness programme at Seliamedu HSS and rural health training centre at MGMCRI will also be held in collaboration with Community Medicine Department of the institution.

International Day of Yoga, which falls on June 21, will feature mass demonstration on the beach and different events by the Tourism, Health and Education departments with participation by CYTER team.

Competitions

The yogasana competitions for students, faculty and staff of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (Medical, Nursing and Dental) will be held in association with Pondicherry Yogasana Association.

The seminar on the concluding day will feature lectures, lec-dems, workshops and panel discussion by eminent experts.
