Cultural programmes, fireworks, a tea party for freedom fighters and a demonstration by fire services personnel of the modern equipment recently procured will mark the celebrations of the Puducherry Liberation Day on November 1.

The decision to observe November 1 as Liberation Day and a public holiday by the Government of the Union Territory of Puducherry was taken last year following the recommendation of a government-constituted high-power committee which had examined historical records.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will hoist the national tricolour at Gandhi Thidal on Sunday morning and inspect the guard of honour. Contingents of school children and police personnel will participate in the parade, said a government official. The Department of Art and Culture is organising traditional cultural programmes, while the Department of Tourism will host a photography exhibition showcasing the history of this former French colony.

On Sunday evening, the Fire and Rescue Services Department will conduct a demonstration of the modern equipment it had acquired recently. At Kamban Kalairangam, Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh and Mr. Rangasamy will felicitate freedom fighters. The programme will also have cultural performances by Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam.

The government is organising free bus services from the New Bus Stand to Gandhi Thidal and Kamban Kalairangam.

All the government buildings, statues and entrance arches will be illuminated and grand fireworks will be organised by the Department of Tourism, said the official.
