Electricity Minister T. Thiagarajan on Wednesday said electricity tariff in Puducherry is less in comparison with any other States in the country.
Answering questions raised by Members in the Assembly, Mr. Thiagarajan said no hike was imposed on consumers instead of surcharge rate has been substantially reduced. He also said earlier a consumer who paid Rs. 149 per 100 unit would now be charged Rs. 146 only.
He said with the approval of Puducherry Government, an application was submitted to Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) last January to revise the tariff. The JERC also approved the new tariff on April 10 and new rates came into effect from April 1.
However, Mr. Thiagarajan said the tariff was hiked to consumers who use above 300 units. There was no proposal before the JERC to raise the tariff who consume above 500 units. The tariff rate is lower to several consumers when compared with last financial year.
He also added that the tariff is much cheaper than in New Delhi. Replying to a question on uninterrupted power supply, Mr. Thiagarajan said the Electricity Department would take steps to supply uninterrupted power to all areas in the Union Territory.
