Aimed at reforming procedures to obtain licenses and easing the process of doing business in the Union Territory, the Department of Industries and Commerce has launched the Ease of Doing Business portal.

The portal — https://eodb.py.gov.in — was unveiled by Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy in the presence of Revenue Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Industries secretary H.P.S. Sran and director P. Priytarshny among others in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Simplifying rules

Mr. Narayanasamy said the emphasis was on simplification and rationalisation of existing rules and introduction of information technology as a tool to make governance more efficient and effective.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has created the portal with the support and expertise of the National Informatics Centre.

“The main intention of the reforms is to bring in automated online systems for obtaining various clearances from authorities concerned by entrepreneurs intending to start business,” Mr. Narayanasamy said.

The Ease of Doing Business portal will act as a common platform for various services such as setting up a business, allotment of land and obtaining construction permit, complying with environment procedures and labour regulations, obtaining infrastructure related utilities, tax procedures, carrying out inspections and enforcing contracts.

Attracting investors

According to Ms. Priytarshny, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, ranks all States and U.T.s with respect to ‘Ease of Doing Business’, against a predefined set of key parameters.

“An improved ranking will project a better image of the U.T. in the national arena and it will have better prospects of attracting the attention of investors,” Ms. Priytarshny said.
