Students of the Government Women’s Polytechnic on Friday abstained from classes from the second day and staged a sit-in protest in front of the Collectorate on Vazhudavur Road demanding holding of internal examinations.

More than 100 students, backed by the Students Federation of India (SFI), withdrew their protest after the authorities assured them that the government had been holding talks to end teachers’ strike.

Over 4,000 staff in 18 society-run colleges have been on an indefinite strike since January 18 demanding immediate implementation of the seventh pay commission recommendations.

The Joint Action Committee of the society-run colleges resorted to stepped up its agitation after talks with Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy failed.

The protesters, led by Jayaprakash, president, and Ananda, vice-president of SFI, said the students in society-run colleges had grown anxious as the indefinite strike by teachers had not come to an end.

The internal exams, scheduled to be held on January 21, has been postponed because of the strike.
