Police personnel attached to the Katterikuppam station in Puducherry on Thursday came to the timely aid of the relatives of a patient to transport a body since no hearse was available.

Police said Bhuvana and her husband Subramani, 65, of Olinthiyapattu in Villupuram district had come to Thirukanur in Puducherry to meet her sister Mallika working in a brick kiln here. Subramani was suffering from tuberculosis and on Thursday he complained of uneasiness. As his health deteriorated, Mallika tried to arrange for transport but in vain. She with the help of another relative placed Subramani on a push cart and took him all the way to the Katterikuppam primary health centre in Puducherry located 4 km away.

The staff at the health centre declared Subramani brought dead. Mallika sought a hearse to take the body to Olinthiyapattu.

But only an ambulance was available and the staff explained that ambulances could not be used to transport the body.

Police personnel attached to Katterikuppam station who happened to see Mallika’s predicament arranged for a hearse with the help of the Kottakuppam Islamic Welfare Society in Villupuram district.

When contacted, Director of Medical and Health Services S. Mohan Kumar said the PHC would have arranged for a hearse if the family had waited for sometime, he said.
