Pipe bomb case trial to commence soon

Bomb was planted outside Narayanasamy’s house

The trial in the case relating to the planting of a pipe bomb near the residence of the former Union Minister, V. Narayanasamy is set to commence on June 22.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet before the Principal Sessions Court, which is also a special court handling terror cases. The NIA began the investigation on January 30.

Thiruchelvan, Thangarasu, Kaviarasu and Kalailingam of Sivaganga district, all members of the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army, a banned organisation under the Unlawful Associations (Prevention) Act, 1967, were arrested by the Tamil Nadu Q Branch police in Madurai last March. They were accused of planting a pipe bomb near the Reliance Supermarket on the outskirts of Madurai. During investigation, they allegedly confessed to having planted the pipe bomb outside Mr. Narayanasamy’s house as well.

Thereafter, Karthik (40) of Jai Hindpuram, Madurai, and John Mark of Ramanathapuram were arrested. Filing a voluminous charge sheet before Principal Sessions Court last October, the NIA cited the six persons as accused in the case. It said the accused have been charged under Section 120 B (Conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, provisions of Explosives Substances Act, 1908 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

On Monday the Principal Sessions Judge P. Velmurugan framed charges against the accused. After framing the charges, the Judge adjourned the case for trial.
