All India Congress Committee general secretary-in charge of the Union Territory Mukul Wasnik on Sunday charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his representatives occupying constitutional positions with trying to strangulate the democratically headed Congress government led by Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy.

Speaking after launching the Project Shakti app at Kamban Kalai Arangam here, Mr. Wasnik said, “though the U.T. was rapidly moving forward, the Centre was trying to create problems. The will of the people is being trampled upon by the Centre. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister and his representatives are trying to strangulate the government and trying to crush the aspiration of the youth, farmers and workers. No Congressman should tolerate what Mr. Modi is doing,” he said.

Criticises Bedi

In a veiled reference to Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, he said that people appointed in important constitutional posts, instead of helping the government, are creating problems in governance.

“No Congressman should tolerate this and we should take the message to every person and protest with our fullest strength. The time has come to go to every remote corner and galvanise the party and ensure that the U.T. elects a Congress member of parliament in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.”

Referring to Project Shakti, he said the app was going to transform the decision-making in the party. It would be a system where Congress president Rahul can directly interact with party workers and simultaneously he will be able to receive the views. The opinion of the workers was important and Shakti would be used to the fullest possible extent. This was a revolutionary step in democratising the decision-making process.

Mr. Wasnik said that the days of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre were numbered and the Gujarat model had become a failure. Mr. Modi could not say that he would implement the Gujarat model in the entire country. Gujarat was not a model on which the nation should move forward and all the promises he had extended to the people had not been fulfilled.

Statehood promise

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said that 2019 elections was a big challenge for the Congress. “We will win the elections and all our sufferings in Puducherry will come to an end. Statehood will be available within two months after a government under Rahul Gandhi is formed,” he said.

AICC secretary-in charge of the U.T. Sanjay Dutt, Ministers A. Namassivayam, Malladi Krishna Rao, M. Kandasamy, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, R. Kamalakannan, and former PCC president A.V. Subramaniam were present.
