Even as the birth centenary of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran was being celebrated, organisers in Tiruvannamalai were reviving memories of MGR by screening his films in every taluk.
The hi-tech LED mobile publicity van had been criss-crossing the district’s 11 taluks screening the popular actor-turned politician’s songs and movies in the evenings. A photo exhibition showcasing MGR’s schemes, achievements and meetings with leaders, was also on the display.
Organised by the Information and Public Relations department, theexhibition was being held at the bus stands in every taluk, while movies were screened through the publicity van. In Tiruvannamalai, the exhibition and screening of movie was organised near the Sri Arunchaleswarar Temple.
“We are screening movies of the former CM at every taluk. As of now, we are screening movies such as ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’, ‘Anbe Vaa’, ‘Mannadhi Mannan’ and ‘Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’. While the photo exhibition starts at 4 p.m., the songs are screened between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the movie screening commences at 6 p.m. After inaugurating the celebrations in Tiruvannamalai, we have covered Kilpennathur, Thandrampet and Chengam taluks till now,” B. Muthamizh Selvan, the district’s public relations officer, and coordinator of the celebrations, said.
Sevur S. Ramachandran, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments was the chairman of the district-level committee for the centenary celebrations and the Collector Prashant M. Wadnere was the member secretary.
The organisers planned to cover Kalasapakkam, Polur, Arni, Cheyyar, Venbakkam, Vandavasi and Chetpet taluks in the coming days. “This is an effort to bring the former CM alive on screen for the public. We have been receiving good response from the public,” he added.
On Saturday, vans from neighbouring districts would also join.
